Learn Photoshop for Basic Use in 10 Quick and Easy Steps

For photographers and graphic designers, Adobe Photoshop is one of their essential tools. However, for those who just start their journey on graphic design or photo editing, Photoshop can be complicated to use. Photoshop layers

Layers play an important role in your Photoshop project; it lets you organize your work until the distinct levels, so you can easily control how your work is displayed, edited, and printed, especially when you create different layers. There are several things to do with layers, but for basic use, you can start with creating a new layer.

To create a new layer, click the Layer menu, select New, and then click Layer. A dialog box of New Layer will appear. All you have to do is typing the name for the layer on the Name box, and click OK to get the new layer.

Transform Tools are used to change the objects, photos, or images in terms of their form, shapes, and size. Transforming images can be done by simply choosing the Edit menu and select Transform. In the given options you can choose the actions that you need to take.

There are four basic selections of transforming images that you need to know. The first one is Free Transformation which can be used to change the size and rotate marquee. The second selection is Skew, functioned to change the shape by moving the object’s sides. The third one is Distort which has the ability to alter the shape by pulling the corners out or in. Perspective transform becomes the last option. It will pull in the adjacent corners to change the object’s shape.

Basic rules for editing

Photo editing is one of the most initial roles of Photoshop. If you want to learn Photoshop, it is a wise thing to start from the editing. However, please note that when you want to edit an image or photo, the first thing you need to do is duplicate it, and then use the copy in the editing process.

The most basic editing technique is cropping in which it can be done by using three different ways: with the Crop Tools, the Marquee Tools, and manual cropping to a specific size. In addition to cropping, another technique to edit the image is correcting, an option that can make your image look better. Some of the basic corrections include Red Eye and Hot Spot Removal, Adding Flash, and Color Adjustments.

Adjusting colors, effects, and filters

Adjusting colors, effects, and filters are included in the editing process. They are presented in the specific layer, namely Adjustments layers palette. It can be spotted easily on the list of palettes in the software.

The palette itself consists of several icons to adjust the colors, effects, and filters of your picture, such as setting the brightness level, contrast, balance, hue, and other effects. Besides adjusting manually, you can use adjust the image automatically by selecting Auto Tone, Auto Contrast, or Auto Color in the Image menu.

Using selection tools

To use Selection Tool quickly when you learn Photoshop, you can find it on the edit toolbar in your workspace. Moreover, Selections Tools consist of several options with different options.

  • Move, to move objects on the page.
  • Marquee, to select the object using rectangular or circular line around it.
  • Lasso, to draw a freehand border selection around the object.
  • Magic Wand, to select several objects with similar characteristics.
  • Crop, to select, keep, and resize a particular object.
  • Eye Dropper, to take color samples from one area to be used in other areas.

Fixing imperfect photos

In addition to photo editing, Photoshop is useful to fix your imperfect photo. To do so, you can use some basic corrections that are mentioned earlier. Red Eye Removal, for example, can be used to fix the red color of the person’s eye in a photograph. Meanwhile, Adding Flash option is used to give the light and fix some dark or underexposed photographs.

Sharpening or softening photos

Sharpening technique is used if your photo is out of focus. On the opposite, softening process is intended to make your photo does not look too sharp. To sharpen a photo, you need to make it on the full size by using the Zoom tool. After that, select Filter, Sharpen, and Unsharp Mask. In the dialog box, you need to adjust the numbers until you get the sharpness amount you are looking for.

Meanwhile, if you want to soften the photo, duplicate the layer first and work your project in the Background Copy. In this case, you need to select Filter, and then choose Blur and Gaussian Blur. Adjust the opacity to 50%, select the Eraser Tool, and apply it to your photo.

Designing pattern and texture

Designing pattern and texture can be done using various selections of brush. On its basic use, Brush tool is intended to draw and stroke some textures in different colors and thickness. If you want to use this option, you need to select the tool, and then click on the selected area to brush the pattern or texture you like. You can also use the Options bar that consists of brush, flow, mode, and opacity options to adjust or customize your drawing brush.

Basic typography for quote images

Adding typography to your workspace is also considered as a basic knowledge you should know when you start to learn Photoshop. Moreover, you can use this option to type some inspirational quotes on your selected picture.

It can be done by selecting a new layer for the text, select the Text tool, click Doc, and then you can begin to type some quotes or written texts. You can adjust the text by changing its fonts, shapes, and colors before applying it to the selected picture.

Saving the works in a different format

Once you finished a project, you need to save it for later use. Photoshop lets you choose two different formats for saving your project: JPEG for image file and PSD for Photoshop saving. Simply choose File, click Save and Save As, and then choose the format you want to save. After that, click the Save button.
